The Member for Mbeere North (Hon. Geoffrey Ruku, MP) to ask the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development: - Could the Cabinet Secretary— (i) explain the reasons why Roundup, a herbicide used in weed control on farms is still stocked in the Kenyan market despite the herbicide being scientifically linked to various forms of cancer in humans and other adverse effects on the ecosystem? (ii) state whether the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) has ever undertaken any independent research on the carcinogenic effects of Roundup or reviewed the research findings that led to banning of the herbicide in Europe and the Americas? (iii) explain why the PCPB has permitted the use of Roundup in the Country yet the herbicide has been banned in the Americas and Europe due to its scientifically proven carcinogenic effects? (iv) state the preventive measures that the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) has taken to ensure that farmers and consumers of food produce under Roundup weed-control are cushioned from its effects, including plans for compensation of victims?
