With the support of the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), we hosted a digital rights and safety workshop that sought to enhance awareness on the Data Protection Act among other related issues with regards to digital rights. The workshop drew participation from youth leaders (higher education institutions and political party youth leagues) who were taken through the components of the Act and its application.
Ms. Risper Onyango, a policy lead at the Lawyers Hub Kenya, moderated a discussion on digital rights and the gendered perspective on data protection in our context and globally. She emphasized on using online spaces to exercise individual human rights while taking caution not to violate the rights of special interest groups such as privacy or exclusion of their optimal use of online services through limited access. She called on participants to take necessary safeguards to ensure compliance with the law as more services and interactions continue moving to the online space.
The workshop came just a day after the 20th edition of the #SaferInternetDay that works towards promoting safer and more responsible use of online technology and devices.
