On 7th August 2023, Mzalendo Trust in collaboration with the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA) and the National Assembly hosted Bunge Youth Dialogue Forum to strengthen dialogue between parliament youth leaders and youth, as well as developing practical recommendations and solutions on thematic areas from young people to inform future legislative interventions in Parliament.
The forum which brought together youth representatives drawn from all the 47 counties provided an avenue for the youth to engage their leaders and develop practical recommendations that will inform legislative interventions by members of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA).
Distinguished figures in attendance included Senator Esther Okenyuri, Hon. Sylvanus Osoro, Hon. Rachel Nyamai, Hon. John Gitonga, Ms. Amarins Gerlofsma, the Second Secretary of Youth Participation at the Netherlands Embassy in Kenya, Sen. Methu Muhia, Honorable Udgoon Siyad, and East African Legislative Assembly MP Honorable Maina Karobia, among other notable individuals.
During the forum, members of the Bunge Youth actively participated in committee sessions dedicated to critical issues such as the high cost of living, unemployment, and climate change. Subsequently, these discussions yielded recommendations that were later presented in the National Assembly for deliberation and potential adoption.
This forum was an integral part of the Power of Dialogue Programme, an initiative implemented by Mzalendo Trust and generously supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Netherlands through the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD). Beyond its immediate objectives, the event also played a pivotal role in creating an inclusive platform for youth engagement in the political landscape, amplifying the voices of the youth in matters of national importance.
